Define and prepare
Clarify the question, check existing research, search available catalogues and identify records worth ordering.
Preparation, on-site examination and clear reporting for family, property and local-history questions involving records held at Ceredigion Archives.
Ceredigion Archives preserves records relating to the county formerly known as Cardiganshire. Its catalogues include local government, parish and nonconformist, workhouse, school, court, estate, tithe, map, business and personal collections.
An independent visit can help when you already have a reference, when a catalogue description needs investigating or when several related documents must be compared rather than copied in isolation.
Clarify the question, check existing research, search available catalogues and identify records worth ordering.
Consult the agreed material, take structured notes and request or make images where archive rules, condition and copyright permit.
Provide references, findings and appropriate images or transcriptions, distinguishing conclusions from unresolved leads.
A visit might follow a family through parish or chapel records, examine Board of Guardians or school material, trace property through deeds and maps, or place an individual within a business, estate or local institution.
Parish, chapel, estate and personal papers.
Deeds, tithe material, maps and plans.
Workhouse, school, court and council records.
Newspapers, businesses, societies and collections.
Ceredigion Archives advises that documents can be ordered in advance. Photography, scanning and copying remain at the archivist’s discretion, while fragile, restricted or copyrighted material may require a different approach.
This would be an independent research service by Nick James. It is not operated, endorsed or commissioned by Ceredigion Archives or Ceredigion County Council.
The intended service will cover defined document searches, on-site examination and evidence-led reporting.
